People Poems 7/8
8pm/GROUND FLOOR
FREE ENTRY

People Poems is the solo project of Leeds singer-songwriter Harry Orme, joined by his regular collaborators Francesca Haincourt (vocals) and Matthew Aplin (piano). Taking an indie-folk framework and injecting it with jazz and classical influences, musically People Poems have been described as “a dream pairing of Antony Hegarty and Joanna Newsom” (North Leeds Life) – first and foremost, though, they are storytellers, with a lyrical style that combines the sensibilities of traditional epic folk-ballads and contemporary singer-songwriter confessionals.

Damien McFly 15/8
8pm/GROUND FLOOR
FREE

A multi-instrumentalist, a sound engineer and a powerful voice all wrapped up in one, Damien McFly effortlessly blends the acoustic elements of folk with a rock inspired flair for songwriting.
A powerful collection of heartfelt songs, Damien’s debut album Parallel Mirrors (Oct 2015) channels the best of Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers sound, both bands having been a huge influence on him as he developed as a songwriter. Each instrument on the release has been recorded unplugged, utilising the natural ambience and reverb of specific recording locations to pick up the warmth of live performance on microphone.

Alex Lipinski 27/7
8:00pm/GROUND FLOOR
FREE

Alex Lipinski’s caressing sympathy, full-throated resentment, and the raw rockabilly excitement of earliest Elvis have grabbed unwary listeners at clubs from his native West Country to Krakow, from Philadelphia to New York and beyond. He has followed in the footsteps of his heroes Lennon and Dylan to London’s Tin Pan Alley and the Chelsea Hotel, soaking up experience evident in his urgent live conviction. The crafted intimacy of his debut album catches much of the mature musical control and adult yearning that already sets him apart.

Stand Up and Spit

£6/4 (writingonthewall.org.uk)

Writing on the Wall Festival Presents: Stand Up and Spit

‘Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores most people’ (Adrian Mitchell) … but not Stand Up and Spit! Speaking Volumes brings ranting poetry to WOW. Accessible, protesting, diverse, inclusive, political, working-class, humorous yet also deadly serious, Ranting poetry appeared in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. Young rowdy writers with something to shout about, it was closely allied with punk and reggae and was the vibrant precursor of today’s spoken word and performance poetry. It is the verse that appeals to all, that imagines poetry for the people, by the people.

Join original Ranters Tim ‘Teething’ Wells, a teenage Ranter who stepped up between bands and at reggae nights to perform, and Ginger John, a stalwart of the Northern scene. Salena Godden, a poet who came after Ranting but fully embodied its ethos and ideas. WoW’s own Blue Saint and members of Liverpool Writers Alia Boqash and Amina Atique complete the line-up.

An Evening with Alexei Sayle
8pm (doors 7pm)/First Floor
£8/6 (writingonthewall.org.uk)

Writing on the Wall Festival Presents: An Evening with Alexei Sayle

Liverpool’s very own Marx brother (Karl, not Harpo) joins WoW to tell tales from the second instalment of his brilliant memoir Thatcher Stole my Trousers, where we find him taking the London comedy world by storm. Fascinating, funny, angry and entertaining, it’s a story of class and comedy, politics and love, fast cars and why it’s difficult to foul a dwarf in a game of football.

When the Comedy Store opened in London, Alexei Sayle responded to an advert in Private Eye for would-be comedians. He soon became its first master of ceremonies. Alexei Sayle has written two short story collections and five novels, including the fascinating and hugely entertaining Stalin Ate My Homework (2010), which focused on Alexei’s early life. Host Brian Reade is an award-winning journalist and writer, who has two columns in the Daily Mirror. He was named Columnist of The Year 2000 at The British Press Gazette Awards, and in 2003 was named Sports Columnist of The Year in the Sports Journalism Awards. Brian has written about his life long support of Liverpool FC in 44 Years With The Same Bird: A Liverpudlian Love Affair, and the almost collapse of the club in the hands of American owners Hicks and Gillette in An Epic Swindle – 44 Months With a pair of Cowboys.

Liam McClair 11/5
8pm/Ground Floor
Free Entry

Having spent time gigging in and around Liverpool, it’s through a keen understanding of creating immediately infectious tunes, coupled with heartfelt songwriting, that he has cemented Liam’s status amongst the North West’s brightest lights. Meanwhile, support slots alongside the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen (not once or twice, but five times, not to mention dates with the band’s frontman, Ian McCulloch, across the UK), Kimberly Anne and Circa Waves have helped to increase his exposure.

Fittingly titled debut EP ‘Honest’ sees McClair wearing heart on sleeve, which may well be the only place he knows to put it. From the instantly radio playlist-able Alchemy, and its head-bobbing acoustic guitar rhythm and soaring background harmonisation, to the desperately romantic lyricism on the title number, it reveals a man who holds nothing back.

Concerned with telling stories, and inspiring others to get to know stories of old through reinterpreting classic tales, it’s an astute approach to music that cares little for anything throwaway. The product of a long background of musical training that began before he reached his teens and ended by mastering self-taught guitar, it’s not without good reason that McClair has been making significant waves amongst the industry and audiences alike, with advocates including Newton Faulkner, BBC Introducing, 6Music and XFM.

‘Honest’ entered the iTunes singer/songwriter chart at #7.

Mellowtone Presents: Nick Ellis EP Launch
8pm/First Floor
£5 (skiddle.com)

NICK ELLIS: ‘GRACE & DANGER’
Recorded live at St George’s Hall, Liverpool

Ellis is rapidly cementing his reputation as one the most exciting prospects on the live circuit in Liverpool, both as a solo artist and as frontman with beat modernists The Blue Soul.

Recorded in a single late night session at the historic Crown Court Room of St. George’s Hall, the eight tracks on Grace & Danger capture not only Ellis’ sublime live performance, but also the magic of the fabled room itself, channeling the spirits of those who have passed through its infamous walls.

Ellis first came to prominence as a songwriter and vocalist during Liverpool’s post-millennial underground beat renaissance, and this long-awaited solo release marks a departure and new direction for the man whose music has been described as “A conversation between Elvis Costello and John Martyn.”

The Grace and Danger E.P. will be available as a limited edition run of just 500, housed in a beautiful package featuring artwork and photography by designer/illustrator Lisa Robson of Lost Plots.

The EP is available to pre-order now from Mellowtone Records at www.mellowtonerecords.com
