FREE GIG: Anne-Marie Sanderson
8pm/ground floor
free entry

AnneMarie Sanderson’s voice is evocative of birds in flight – soaring, gliding, swooping – and it finds its home among the tall trees of her deft guitar work. Describing Sanderson’s distinctive indie-folk music in these terms is apt; she is an artist who casts a careful eye and attentive ear to the natural environment, alternating between wide-eyed wonder and wry observation. As well as drawing from a host of musical influences, some of Sanderson’s songs pay homage to literary greats, and she is currently recording a collection of songs inspired by authors including Robert Macfarlane, Barbara Kingsolver, and Doris Lessing.

2017 sees her heading out on the road for a bevy of solo dates around the UK. A native of Cumbria, having recently returned from several years of performing her music in the States, Sanderson is currently based in Warwickshire. Gentle but persistent, the stream of Sanderson’s musical output carves an ever-deepening channel, determining its own path.

free gig: Toby hay & David Ian Roberts
8pm/ground floor
free entry

From near Rhayader in Mid-Wales, Toby Hay, makes instrumental music inspired by the landscape, people and history of the area. Following in the footsteps of the American Primitive guitarists and the British Folk revivalists he composes music for the 6 and 12 string guitar. Influenced by music from all over the world, Indian Ragas, African Kora music and ancient Welsh harp music from the Robert ap Huw manuscript he makes music to capture the atmosphere of the special and under-represented part of Wales where he lives, adding to the long tradition of Welsh string music.

Toby Hay is joined by David Ian Robert – a unique voice and virtuosic fingerstyle guitar playing at the centre of his style, David combines the sounds of 60’s and 70’s folk acts, with Indian and classical music. Whilst influenced by artists such as Nick Drake, John Martyn and Elliott Smith, his ability on the guitar is based upon an ambition to bring original sounds and arrangements from his instrument.

WoWFest: Dave Randall in Conversation with Peter Hooton
doors 7:30pm/first floor
£4-8 adv
Dave Randall, guitarist with the legendary Faithless and his own band Slovo, joins WoWFest 2017 to discuss his new book, Sound System:The Political Power of Music. From the Glastonbury Festival to the Arab Spring, Pop Idol to Trinidadian Carnival, Dave finds political inspiration across the musical spectrum and poses the question: how can we make music serve the interest of the many rather than the few? Sound System is a book of raves, riots and revolution.
Tom Robinson says of Sound System, ‘This engaging, hugely readable book describes aspects of the musical world I recognise alongside other, deeply shocking aspects of which I’d never been remotely aware. It should be compulsory reading for anyone interested in the state of the world – and in the essential, life-affirming role music can play in changing it for the better.’
Dave will give an illustrated talk and play a little live guitar. He will be in conversation with Peter Hooton, lead singer of the Farm, one of Liverpool’s best-loved bands.

WoWFest: punk survivors
doors 6:30pm/first floor
£5-10 ADV.
Punk was one of the most significant revolutions ever to happen in music. Although short-lived as a pure musical force, punk still returns, year after year, as a symbol of anarchy, rebellion and change. It’s easy to see it; the hair, the gestures, the crowded clubs and extreme clothes, but something else about punk still resonates with us, 40 years on.
What was it that held punk together and helped it to survive as an idea in even more dangerous times? WoWFest are bringing together survivors of punk to review the times, – Steve Ignorant, co-founder of anarcho-punk band Crass; Don Letts, dub-pioneer and video-chronicler of The Clash; and Pauline Murray, the lead singer with punk band Penetration and later, Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls. Continuously active in music and culture since their beginnings in punk, each qualifies as a Punk Survivor. What have they got to tell us about survival? Roger Hill of BBC Radio Merseyside, and something of a punk survivor himself leads the discussion.

This Psychologists in the City discussion on the subject of domestic abuse will be led by Dr. Keri Nixon. Domestic abuse is now discussed quite openly in most communities and is considered wrong by many. Despite this, there is still a deep misunderstanding of why domestic abuse victims stay in relationships, don’t report abuse or worse return to an abusive partner once they have managed to escape. This talk will focus on this misunderstanding drawing on research, Keri’s experience of working within the domestic abuse area for almost twenty years and the voices of women she works with who have escaped abuse. In addition, the more hidden forms of abuse, such as honour based violence and forced marriage will be discussed, to exemplify the difficulties many victims face when fleeing abuse. Keri will explore the mental health ramifications that inflict survivors and how their journey of recovery only begins the day they manage to escape. Escaping physically is the first step, recovering mentally is a long and often difficult journey
