WHISC 35th Birthday
7PM/FIRST FLOOR
£2.50-£5

This year is WHISC’s 35 year anniversary. You are invited to our birthday celebrations on Thursday 11th July 2019 at Leaf @ 7pm

There will be some wonderful prizes up for grabs, poetry, live music, art and stand-up comedy!

For 35 years WHISC has been supporting women throughout Merseyside. Founded by a group of women in 1984 who wanted more provisions for women’s health, WHISC has been at the forefront of women’s health in the city.

We support all women’s mental health and wellbeing, through the provision of psychological therapies, complementary therapies, self-help, exercise classes and health education. We empower all women with information, free support and activities that combat isolation and support wellbeing.

We believe all women should be respected, and girls should grow up with high self-esteem. No one should experience barriers to getting the information, support and care they need for them to achieve optimum health. Our Drop-In provides women with a menu of services which they can engage with and our outreach activities builds links with communities throughout Merseyside.

Presenting
Eithne Browne – Emmerdale Star, Comedian and Proud Scouser

Spoken Word Poetry
Francesca Georgia – Writer – Francesca Georgia is a Yorkshire gal, adopted by the wonderful city of Liverpool. She writes about sex, love and mental health with dark humour, raw honesty and uncensored enthusiasm. Winner of Best New Writing for ‘The Plumbing’ at Liverpool Fringe 2018 and Liverpool Headliners Slam 2018 finalist.
Katie Jarman – A queer poet and performer who works supporting young women by day and poeting about feminism and identity by night. I’ve performed at local events and Leeds International Festival and my first play is being produced by a feminist theatre company early next year

Stand Up Comedy
Verity Dow – Verity doesn’t like to brag BUT she is a socially awkward, thirty two year old, third wheeling professional and soon to be divorcee, who laughs in the face of danger so hard, she has to wear a tena lady! She has been writing and performing comedy for as long as she can remember and all of her stand up stories are true, based on her own entertaining experiences in attempting to adult, divorcing without dignity and surrreal social setbacks

Music Performances
Rachael Jean Harris Music
Galileo Girl – Galileo Girl is the name for the sonic exploration of Abi Dot from Seatbelts. Vibing, dancing and making music in Liverpool, from her basement base. Live peformances in 2018 at The Reeds, Bold Street Festival and the Invisible Wind Factory followed in 2019 in Chester for the Lobotomy Boogie. Mixing folk, spoken word, ambient guitar, and featuring different live collaborators Galileo Girl had been described as sounding like a “Mellow Sabbath” or if “Bjork and Sonic Youth had an Acoustic Child”
WHISC Yukele Band – The Sweet Spots

Evening ceramic mug workshop
6PM/
£45

Would you love to enjoy your morning brew in a beautiful stoneware mug you made? Are you looking to make a gift for a special pal? Join this introduction to ceramics workshop, where you can do just that whist also enjoying a G&T in LEAF.

Poppy, from Clay Elm, who has been playing with mud and creating ceramics for over 8 years will instruct in this relaxed workshop.

In this three hour session you will be guided through the slab building technique to make a mug.
This is a great introduction to hand building with clay and is just enough time to gain an understanding of the material and make something beautiful.

What to Expect

You will learn the process from clay to final piece, we will discuss different clay bodies and methods of creating with clay. You will initially prepare the clay from which to shape your mugs using templates.
Then it’s time to get creative; you can decide on preferred handle shape and create texture or pattern to make your mug unique. I will provide tools and demonstrate decorative techniques with imprinting. Finally you will shape your mug while we discuss glazes and firing techniques.

To ensure a relaxing and rewarding experience for all, the classes are kept to a minimum, only 8 people per class.

After the session you will leave your pieces with me and I will process them for you (glaze and fire them in the kiln). I will dip your mugs in a beautiful snow white glaze. They should take about 3 weeks to process. I will notify you by email when they are ready for collection.

Price Includes

All tuition, materials, firings and glazes.

wowfest: The B Word
Doors 7PM/first floor
£8

The B-word has haunted global headlines since June 2016 with the most unprecedented political move in modern history and it’s been swings and roundabouts ever since. Join writers James Meek, Ros Wynne Jones, Costas Lapavitsas and Anita Sethi as we discuss what happens now.

Brexit has divided a nation and caused much a bemoaned stir across the world with issues such as the Irish backstop and Brits abroad worried they’ll be sent home. It’s brought out impassioned opinions on both sides of the vote and sent the House of Commons into bedlam. Are we feeling strong and stable, or are we shaking at the knees?

Few of us have any idea of what’s going to happen come the 29th March, but hoping to offer a bit of clarity are writers and journalists James Meek (Dreams of Living and Remaining), Ros Wynne-Jones (Senior Feature Writer for The Daily Mirror), Costas Lapavitsas (The Left Case Against The EU) and Anita Sethi (The Guardian, The Observer, The Sunday Times).

WHERE THERE’S TEA THERE’S HOPE

Tea is an intrinsic part of the tradition of many countries the world over, not only a rich part of heritage and national identity, but a valuable part of our day-to-day lives. Playing a key part in moments of comfort, community, celebration and catharsis, the process of making and enjoying tea is as much ritual as it is routine. We will invite our guests to take part in discussions and workshops around tea rituals, tea blending and the perfect cuppa, and also give the opportunity to get artistic with both the leaves and brew of some of our more vibrant teas.

For 2019 LightNight explores personal and collective rituals, from the spiritual to the habitual, and consider how they help us to understand the world and define, or transcend, our place within it.

Evening Ceramic Mug Workshop
7PM-9PM/

Waterstones – Andy McCluskey & Paul Humphreys
7PM/First floor
SOLD OUT

2018 marks the 40th anniversary of one of the world’s most popular electronic bands, Merseyside’s own Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Come and hear Andy McCluskey & Paul Humphreys discuss “Pretending To See The Future” which celebrates their incredible legacy and their seminal effect on the electronic musical revelation which they were at the pioneering forefront of.

Pretending To See The Future is the first official OMD biography since 1987’s Messages. Taking the reader on a journey from their Merseyside beginnings via debut single `Electricity’ (released on Manchester’s iconic Factory label) into the 1980s and a string of Top 40 hits that includes `Enola Gay’, `Souvenir’, `Joan of Arc’, `Locomotion’ and US smash `If You Leave’, the book also covers the band’s break up in the 1990s and their triumphant return in 2006. The book contains a commentary from OMD founders Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys and is packed full of fan memorabilia and hundreds of photos. With many images in full colour and previously unseen pictures from the bands own archive, this is the OMD story as it’s never been told before.

This event has now sold out.

2018 will see the release of Matt’s debut solo album.  It is an album that oozes Americana with its campfire storytelling told mainly on acoustic guitar and piano, reflecting the songwriting skills of some of Matt’s favourite artists Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell and Warren Zevon.

Acclaimed musician and producer Nigel Stonier is producing the album which features Michael Blair (Tom Waits), Thea Gilmore and Robert Vincent and a release date is planned for early January.

Indika – KEFAYA with Elaha Soroor
8.30pm/First floor
£6.00

Giuliano Modarelli, Al MacSween & Joost Hendrickx

Kefaya’s  music  has  been  described  as  “internationalist  music”,  “guerrilla  jazz”,  “contemporary  world-fusion”  and  “global  protest  music”. However  you  attempt  to  describe  them,  they are  a  band  that  truly  escape  musical  definition.  An  eclectic  group  of  immigrants,  travelers  and  international  artists,  Kefaya  seek  to  find  the  common  ground  between  folk  traditions  of  the  world  with a  cutting-edge  sound  rooted  firmly  in  the  21st  century. After  tours  across  India,  Italy  and  the  UK,  Kefaya  are  gaining  a  reputation  for  their  virtuosic  and  mesmerising  live  performances.  Their  shows  are  a  unique  synthesis  of  musical  styles,  exploring  the  universal  connections  that  allow  artists  around  the  world  to  develop  a  collective  voice,  whilst  still  paying  homage  to  their  distinct  traditions  and  identities.

Born  into  a  family  of  Afghan-Hazara  refugees,  Elaha Soroor  first  rose  to  fame  through  the  TV  show Afghan  Star.  Her  rising  popularity  in  a  society  known  for  it’s  persecution  of  female  performers  combined with  her  outspoken  views  on  women’s  rights,  led  to  an  environment  of  serious  personal  danger,  and  Elaha was  eventually  forced  to  flee  Afghanistan.  After  arriving  in  London  as  a  refugee,  Elaha  was  introduced  to award-winning  musician-producer  duo  Kefaya and  they  began  to develop  a  fresh  new  sound,  encompassing  Afghan  folk,  spiritual  jazz,  dub  and  electronica.  Their  new  album  Songs  Of  Our  Mothers  is  a  collection  of  folk  songs  by  Afghan  women.  An  organic meeting  of  traditional  and  contemporary  sounds,  the  album  is  a  bold  protest  against  patriarchy  and  a joyous  statement  of  resilience  and  emancipation.

Gig – Gavin M.
8.00pm/Ground Floor

Gavin M. is a singer/songwriter that has always been fascinated with the power of narrative and its incredible ability to activate our intuition and internal compass to bring a sense of purpose. He has been writing songs for over the past 15 years and has spent the past few years really digging into what makes the eclectic musical community of St. Louis, Missouri (USA) really tick. He is deeply and profoundly influenced by the likes of Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher, Ryan Adams, David Gray, Damien Rice, and Chris Martin.

His songs have references to Cherokee St., Shaw Blvd., The Mississippi River, among an overall arching theme of the bustling city juxtaposed to his native rural metro-east of St. Louis Illinois (across the river east of St. Louis) heritage. His music chronicles the life and times of love and loss, but with a spin of self empowerment, growth, and the idea that one has influence over what their fate or destiny has in store for them.

He is excited to continue his journey discovering as much about St. Louis as he can while continuing to help contribute to it’s growing musical community as he has identified it as his home.  Gavin is also a recording artist with the local St. Louis music collective, Gaslight Studios, having just released a solo EP entitled, “Where Do You Call Home?”.

“An evening of virtuoso solo acoustic guitar.
Featuring:

Becky Langan

Born in Rochdale, England (1992), Becky Langan is a percussive fingerstyle guitarist who employs a combination of extended techniques that explore the outermost reaches of the acoustic guitar.

Becky was a semi-finalist on Guitar Star 2016 (Series 2) which aired on Sky Arts – a TV show which scours the UK to discover a world class guitarist. Throughout this competition, she recorded at Abbey Road Studios with producer Tony Visconti and received mentor sessions from many iconic musicians, including; Tony Iommi, George Benson, Wilko Johnson, Jon Gomm and Preston Reed.

Becky has since grown an appreciative audience from all over the world, and to this day, has generated over 7000 Facebook followers and three million views on one video alone. Following her appearance at the NAMM show in LA, Becky’s ability was soon recognised by some of the most acclaimed brands. She is proud to endorse ToneWood Amp, Jim Dunlop and Taylor Guitars, and feels honoured to own her own signature guitar strings with Newtone strings.

“Becky’s playing is mesmerising” – Tony Iommi

Michael Kobrin

Michael Korbin performs in numerous countries at festivals and at major events and is internationally recognized as a “jaw-dropping” artist. He has released his 2nd album under the renowned label, “Candyrat records”.

Michael has received more than 15 million views on social media of his performances from fans worldwide, and with his unique style, he is often invited to collaborate with other artists. His acoustic performances combine guitar with vocals and consist of original compositions as well as his own interpretation of popular songs whether new or old, all of which blended with “Looping” effects that make the music come alive.”

Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, The Barr Brothers band consists of two brothers: drummer Andrew Barr and songwriter and guitar player Brad Barr, both from Providence, Rhode Island. The third core member is harpist Sarah Pagé.

Second album Sleeping Operator (2014) further explored the connections between the Delta blues and its West and North African ancestry. Leftover songs from the Sleeping Operator sessions were released as a five-track collection Alta Falls (2015).

Their third album Queens of the Breakers was released in autumn 2017. Sarah Pagé will leave the band in 2018. The band tours frequently in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe with some shows played in Japan. Nick’s talent and energy entranced Roy’s fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. The 1994 EP Light at the End of the Kennel was swiftly followed by his powerful 1995 debut long player Seedprompting The Independent to describe him as “hugely talented”.

ROBINSON AND ROHE
8pm/ground floor

Jean Rohe and Liam Robinson were brought together a decade ago by a love of American folk song. In 2013, they began collaborating as co-writers, developing a repertoire of original music that now lives alongside the old songs they hold dear. Their performances evidence their care for fine song craft, detailed arrangements, and elegant harmonies.

‘Robinson and Rohe are musican’s musicians. They create a perfect duo – listening, waiting, complimenting each other and adding just what needs to be added to a song at just the right moment.’ – Minnesota Public Radio

HARVEST SUN PRESENTS: NADINE SHAH
8pm/first floor
£16.50

Singer/songwriter Nadine Shah, joins us here at LEAF!

She has a reputation for a uniquely rich, soulful voice and more importantly, a mystique, that has often been described as a blend between PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. However, her brooding, intensely atmospheric blend of midnight loner pop and torchy, jazz-kissed indie rock owes a nod to fellow English insomniacs like Anna Calvi, Richard Hawley, and Antony Hegarty as well.

Martin Carr ( Boo Radleys) / Satin Beige
7.30pm/first floor
£10 ADV

Martin Carr, formerly songwriter, guitarist and creative force behind The Boo Radleys and bravecaptain, Carr will perform, beginning with a much anticipated set at Tapete Records Celebrates 15 Years of Quality Pop, an all-star live anniversary celebration dated for November 18th at The Lexington, London.

Carr’s long awaited third solo album, NEW SHAPES OF LIFE was written and recorded last year in the Cardiff-based singer-songwriter’s home studio. It’s 8 songs were formed as if under a spell-by soul music, the death of David Bowie, and what proved to be his own increasing emotional breakdown. Carr completely re-imagined his general approach towards making music, moving away from the guitar towards visionary use of sampling, but significantly, focusing more on meaning than craft.

Satin Beige, soulful R&B served up with a side of sass and sprinkling of cello will also be performing.

free gig: Jesse Daniel Edwards & L.A. Edwards
8pm/ground floor
free entry

Edwards & Edwards is the musical collaboration of acclaimed songwriting and harmony brothers duo Jesse Daniel Edwards and L.A. Edwards. The pair grew up in the mountains of southern California harmonising to gospel tracks while tinkering with hand-me-down instruments from their grandparents. Their first song (ages 8 and 6 respectively, was about their mother’s meatloaf). After busking around the US and abroad in their teens while living and recording out of their 1974 VW bus, the brothers eventually became the protégés of Ron Blair (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers).

They went on to appear on the music festival and university circuits full-time performing with Jason Mraz, First Aid Kit, and John Prine amongst others. Their studio and live recordings have been featured in radio, TV, Netflix and are available on Apple Music and Spotify. They continue to share their love of memorable hooks, clever lyrics, and world class harmony-singing both on stage and in the studio, with new releases in production for 2018.

JOHN JOSEPH BRILL
8PM/first flooR
£6 adv

Having spent his early 20s fronting London based heavy rock outfit Burning Beard, John Joseph Brill established himself as a mainstay of the West London music scene. The same musical community that bred The Staves, Laura Marling and Bear’s Den heavily influenced Brill to explore a more confessional, honest form of songwriting and in 2013 he left his former band and the capital and moved to Liverpool. There he honed his craft as a solo artist, immersed in the oeuvre of Leonard Cohen, Jason Molina and Neil Young he began writing and performing, in his unique baritone style, songs about everything from heartbreak to death and friendship.

John Joseph Brill has now released two critically acclaimed EPs, amassing close to 1,000,000 Spotify streams. The first, the Pieces EP, (produced by Andrew Davie of Bears Den and Kristoffer Harris) laid a foundation at radio with support coming from Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio 2 and Radio X as well as in Europe. Lead single ‘Muscle And Bone’ featured as Q’s ‘Track of the Week’, Clash’s ‘Track of the Day’ and received widespread blog coverage. ‘False Names’, the second of the two EP’s, continued to build increased support at radio and online and spawned European support slots with Daughter and Bears Den, topped off with a sold out headline show at St Pancras Old Church and a support with Carole King at Hyde Park’s British Summer Time. At home in the U.K, John has sold out headline shows in multiple major cities and has supported Richard Hawley, Jenny Lee and Nick Mulvey. All this in addition to key slots at Reading & Leeds, Secret Garden Party and Wilderness as well as packed rooms at 7 Layers and Reeperbahn have made for a very exciting 2016 both in the U.K and Europe for the brandy-warm baritone songsmith.

BIRTHDAY WEEK: EMILY BARKER
8pm/first flooR
£13.50

Emily Barker is best known as the writer and performer of the award-winning theme to the hit PBS Masterpiece drama Wallander starring Kenneth Branagh. Growing up in rural Western Australia, Barker fell in love with American roots music from the soul of Aretha Franklin to the country of Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris. Her travels led her to settling in the UK, where she has released a succession of critically acclaimed albums, including Nashville-recorded Applewood Road with Amy Speace and Amber Rubarth.

Her new solo album ‘Sweet Kind of Blue’ was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis with Grammy winning producer Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price, Jason Isbell, Mary Chapin Carpenter). From country-soul ballads to the unfettered joy of the bluesy ‘Sunrise’, the album has been lauded as Barker’s best yet and features contributions from some of Memphis’ finest musicians.

Emily Barker played at LEAF in our first year on Bold Street, so we’re delighted to to welcome her back as part of our birthday celebrations!
