LEAF on Portland Street is nestled in a vibrant neighbourhood in the very centre of the bustling city. Housed in the iconic former RIBA and CUBE gallery, it is an inspiring and intimate space, bringing the very best food, tea, music and good times to Manchester.
When we first laid eyes on the former CUBE Gallery and RIBA building, we had been looking for a beautiful space with bags of character in Manchester for a while and we knew this was the place for us.
Located on Portland Street, in the heart of the city, it’s an exciting and diverse neighbourhood where we can grow and create a space to hang out, discover great music and enjoy delicious wholesome food in a relaxed and welcoming space.
LEAF began as a small tea shop run by friends in a Liverpool city centre gallery in 2007. When we started, our quest was to bring quality loose-leaf tea to the city in an intimate and bohemian space. By early 2008 we knew we had found something we loved doing and needed to expand so we flew the nest to find somewhere more permanent.
We were looking to take ourselves off the beaten track, in a big versatile place that showed loads of potential, so in late 2008 LEAF Tea Shop and Bar opened on Parliament Street. After a rough ride through stormy recession waters, with no passing trade and a blooming big space to fill, we started to make some amazing progress. LEAF on Parliament Street started to raft up many accolades and awards, both locally and nationally. We developed a fabulous team and the best regular customers a tea shop could ever dream of. By this point we were hosting club nights, pudding clubs, album launches, vintage markets and much more…
Looking for a bigger space to house our café and all of our monthly events, we found a truly magnificent building in autumn 2010. LEAF on Bold Street stands in a beautiful art deco building – formerly a tea room in the 1920’s, a cinema in the late 20th Century and most recently Microzine clothes shop. The exciting opening of LEAF on Bold Street sadly also saw the closure of LEAF on Parliament Street shortly after; just as caterpillars turn into butterflies!
After five fabulous years establishing our venue on Bold Street, we can’t wait to bring our ethos of tea, music and good times to other cities. Manchester, being a similarly exciting and creative city, seemed the perfect place for us to look so we began our search for a beautiful space with bags of character that would be the perfect home… We eventually discovered the former CUBE Gallery and RIBA building on Portland Street and fell in love with it’s history, charm and neighbourhood.
It’s taken a couple of years and a lot of love, dedication and careful renovation work to make LEAF on Portland Street happen, and we’re happy to say that it has now opened it’s doors and is bringing the same great quality wholesome food and drinks, music and good times to Manchester that LEAF on Bold Street has become famous for.
LEAF is born out of a love of tea and music.
Our values are simple.
Great Food and Drink
We enjoy serving great food and drink. All of our food is freshly made in our kitchens using the best locally-sourced produce, everything from the our Lebanese Style Stew to the jam on our porridge.
We are also passionate about tea because it’s tasty, fascinating, varied, full of history and can even be healthy.
Good Times, All the Time
Ever gone to a great café and wondered why it wasn’t open for wine and olives at night? Or visited a cool bar in the day and experienced stale ale and sticky floors from the night before? We’re trying to create truly versatile day and night time venues that are relaxing and inspiring. We welcome morning birds, early risers, night owls or just the in-betweeners.
Independence and Imagination
We work hard to create an environment where there is something for everyone, whether it’s for business, leisure or anything inbetween. We want to bring people together through exciting art, music, films and events. We love putting on new and innovative events and we’d love to hear from anyone who wants to get involved.
A Passion for what we do
We are not in business to simply make a profit. Tea, music and good times are things we are passionate about. This is, and always will be, why we are in business.
You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy tea – and that’s kind
of the same thing.
All of our teas are available to buy in tea tins from our online shop and in our venues so that you can enjoy them at home too. The perfect way to brighten up those rainy Monday mornings.
We also sell our tea wholesale, so if your company is interested, contact one of the team by emailing email@example.com for a wholesale list or to enquire about stocking our tea.
We love tea. Especially loose leaf tea. It’s fascinating, tantalising and actually healthy to drink in varying degrees (also virtually calorie-free if taken without milk or sugar!)
We stock over 50 rare loose leaf teas from across the globe and have won Great Taste Awards in 2015 & 2016 for our blends ‘Secret Garden’ and ‘Autumn Fire’. We are a nation of tea drinkers and we want you to enjoy more than just a builder’s brew.
Our supreme teas are wonderfully natural with virtually no artificial colourings, preservatives or flavouring and we only source the finest leaves to create our unique blends.
Keep your eyes peeled for one of our tasting events or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
We’ve been lucky enough to be recognised by local and national press and awarding-bodies. Here’s a few of our most recent highlights:
