LEAF up close with…

We’re delighted to announce that we will host a series of gigs showcasing the best local and upcoming musicians in an intimate setting allowing people to discover new music and connect with artists in an authentic and personal way. Our ‘Up Close With…’ gigs will be held at both LEAF venues in Liverpool and Manchester, with the artists being hand-selected by music promoters Harvest Sun.

The first gig in the ‘Up Close With…’ series is Kinshasa-born, London-bred singer/songwriter Jordan Mackampa, often described as a troubadour with a timeless soul and lyrics drenched in heart-felt sympathy. His critically acclaimed debut EP “Physics” was celebrated for its unique combination of jazz-soaked beats, folk melodies and effortless gospel harmonies by the likes of NME, The 405, Julie Adengua and Clash Magazine.

LEAF on Bold Street has long been a long-time favourite for quality wholesome food, drinks and good times, as well as having an impressive back catalogue of gigs, welcoming a wide-range of bands from local favourites to established artists.

LEAF on Portland Street opened in Manchester last year and is already following in LEAF on Bold Street’s footsteps, making itself known for the same great food, drinks and good times. The ‘Up Close With…’ gigs mark the start of its musical heritage.

LEAF Up Close With… Jordan Mackampa will be at LEAF on Portland Street in Manchester at 7pm on Tuesday 30th May and at LEAF on Bold Street in Liverpool at 7pm on Wednesday 31st May. Both dates are free entry.

Introducing our Exotic Garden Pale ale, which brewed in collaboration with the guys at Black Lodge Brewery!

We joined the guys from Black Lodge Brewery for its first brew back in summer and it has been going down a treat ever since. The addition of the Exotic Garden Green Tea imparts a sweet tropical flavour to the beer which complements the bitter notes of the green tea and hops, resulting in a perfectly well-balanced beer.

Since summer, we have had a few kegs on tap at LEAF on Bold Street which sold out within a few hours. The Exotic Garden Pale also made appearances at various beer festivals and was very well received by beer aficionado’s – it sold out in hours at Liverpool Craft Beer Expo and was named Craft Beer Calling’s ‘beer of the festival’!

We’re really excited to have the LEAF tea beer on tap in LEAF on Portland Street too. Manchester has a brilliant craft beer culture and we think this beer will fit right in alongside the other fantastic local offerings.

We are proud to announce that LEAF on Portland Street, in Manchester, is officially open! The tea house, versatile café bar and arts space is set over two floors, bringing our unique and welcoming atmosphere to Portland Street, together with over 60 varieties of loose leaf tea and an award-winning all day menu that includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

We are proud to open our large, independent space in this area of Manchester, nestled below the creative community of Bruntwood’s West Village. We already run two versatile café-bar and arts spaces in Liverpool, and have been on the lookout for an imaginative space like this for years. Our new home in the former RIBA CUBE gallery is a magnificent grade II listed space with bags of character and charm and features a 300-capacity area for gigs, creative and corporate events.

We began in Liverpool in 2007, and focused on creating a relaxing and imaginative space to enjoy wholesome food, award winning loose-leaf tea (The Autumn Fire blend won a Great Taste Award last month) and a varied event calendar. Over the last few years we have won many accolades for our food from The Guardian, The Times and The Independent, and also won two Great Taste awards in 2015 and in 2016.

Natalie Haywood, MD of LEAF says:I’ve been looking for years for a big versatile space in Manchester and when the RIBA CUBE Gallery became available it seemed like the perfect venue. The location felt right, and it’s in a diverse neighbourhood, which fits our desire to create a welcoming venue for everyone to enjoy tea, music and good times. We cannot wait to open the doors!”.

LEAF on Bold Street book nook

“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” – we hear you, C.S. Lewis!

We can think of nothing better than sipping our favourite tea while having our nose in a good book, so we’ve introduced a ‘book nook’ at LEAF on Bold Street – it’s a ‘book exchange’ library where you can browse through the books and if you’d like to take one home with you just bring along another book to swap! It’s a great way to keep your literary collection fresh, and the books in the library are always changing as people bring in their books to swap.

You can find the ‘book nook’ on top of the piano on the first floor of LEAF on Bold Street. There’s something for everyone in the library; from sci-fi, to chick lit, to classics and thrillers! Don’t forget to bring a book with you to swap if you want to take one home with you.

We’re absolutely delighted that not just one, but two of our teas are now Great Taste Awards winners! Our Autumn Fire black tea blend has been awarded a one-star Great Taste Award for 2016, joining our Secret Garden which won a Great Taste Award last year.

The Great Taste Awards are judged blind and are recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers and retailers alike. The award is judged by over 500 of the most demanding palettes and they loved our blend and were particularly impressed with the tea base and the beautiful, well-managed flavours.

‘We are delighted to have won this prestigious award for the second year running. We are very passionate about all of our teas and it’s fantastic to get the recognition for one of our most popular blends.’

We’re going to celebrate with a nice cup of tea, cheers!

LEAF collaboration beer

We can finally let you in on our little secret… a few months ago we created a collaboration beer with our friends at Black Lodge Brewery, a green tea pale ale infused with our own Exotic Garden green tea. Black Lodge Brewery has a great reputation for making delicious craft beers and experimenting with unusual flavour combinations, so they are the perfect brewery to collaborate with to make a delicious new beer.

Exotic Garden is a beautifully fruity Sencha green tea with the exotic flavours of papaya, mango and carrot which exudes a bold and invigorating flavour. This makes it a delightful addition to the classic pale ale, resulting in a wonderfully refreshing and summery beer!

If you were lucky enough to try some of the beer at the recent Liverpool Craft Beer Expo (it sold out within hours), then you’ll know how delicious it is. If you missed it, you can read the fantastic reviews on untappd and don’t worry, it will be coming to LEAF on Bold Street on tap very soon…

Retro Sundays Vintage Fair

On the last Sunday of every month, LEAF plays host to our longest-running regular event – Retro Sundays Vintage Fair, run by the much-loved Pillbox Vintage.  Our relationship with these lovely folk began 6 years ago, when LEAF was based on Parliament Street, and has continued to thrive to this day on Bold Street.

Between the hours of 11am – 5pm on these Sundays, the stallholders set up shop on our first floor and provide a fantastic array of vintage garments and accessories. The quality of stock on offer is of course paramount to the success and loyal following of the business, and this is something they have refused to compromise on.  All stalls featured in the fair sell vintage and only vintage, and as the stallholders do not have shops, costs are competitive.  The range of items on sale is eclectic, from hats to home ware, and Pillbox Vintage are very proud to boast an excellent men’s range, this being a section sometimes neglected in vintage fairs.

Pillbox Vintage are a local, independent business, and they have grown over the years through the ability to keep fresh and relevant, whilst continuing to attract their loyal fan base back again and again.  Although there are a variety of vintage fairs in Liverpool, there are some particular aspects of Retro Sunday that have secured it as a firm favourite in the vintage calendar.  The fair has always been a free entry event, which is something Pillbox are very passionate about.  Simply put by Katy Moussaada, director of Pillbox Vintage, ‘why would you pay to shop?!’

Venue choice is also a key consideration, with a friendly and lively atmosphere being a trademark.  There is always food and drink on offer from the host venue, enhancing the overall experience of shopping vintage, and we love having these fantastic stalls on show for our customers.  This boutique fair is the perfect chance to bag something stylish, original and highly affordable all in the relaxed setting of LEAF, and we hope you continue to enjoy shopping retro with us, and Pillbox Vintage.  Gather your friends and revel in Retro Sundays.

Julie Byrne to play at LEAF

Wednesday 27th August / 9pm / Ground Floor

Julie Byrne will be joining us for a free gig later this month, which promises to be an unmissable one for psychedelic and traditional folk fans alike. Having just released her debut album, Rooms with Walls and Windows, Julie will bring her quietly mystical world to us, and we can’t wait.

“The songs of Julie Byrne are hushed and mysterious. Close-miked within the natural reverb of windowless rooms, utilising finger-picked, nylon-strung guitar and Byrne’s rich sequestered voice, they unfold from bare folk simplicity to abstracted tales of home life and longing that conjure up a simultaneous feeling of warm cabin intimacy and a deep interior sadness.” – MOJO Magazine

Here at LEAF we have a lovely
box space in which to hold micro exhibitions.  It is 447cm x 83cm x 9cm.  There is no glass across the front, so although the work is probably too high for people to reach, it would be exposed to the LEAF daily grind. This is a working café and is used for events, therefore the artwork needs to fit in with the ethos of LEAF as well as its design concept.  There will be the potential for workshops or talks to run alongside the exhibition also.

Type of work we like
– 2D, 3D or a mixture of both
– Graphic
– Photography
– Illustration
– Sculpture
– Hacker

Although we are always open to suggestions we will work with the artist to decide whether their work fits in the space.

Proposal Portfolio
We ask that you send a proposal
of the exhibition to us at with high-resolution photographs of the work and dimensions of each piece.

We cannot take any responsibility for the work, therefore any work being displayed in the building is at the artists own liability. It is advisable for the artist to get insurance on the piece prior to the exhibition.

Sales & Commission
Artists can sell their work in store however LEAF take a 20% commission. We reserve the right to keep the work up until the end of the exhibition.

Length of Exhibition
Work will usually be displayed for
4 months at a time.

– The installation will be organised between LEAF and the artist.
– Installation will usually take place on the last weekend of the month between 7.30am and 10am.
